A Four Points Commission by Jim Meredith

“The Grey Dawn is Breaking”

Kathleen Mavourneen”

At the Midwest Clinic, the Four Points Wind Ensemble performed for educators, musicians, and composers from around the world. Within the audience was composer James Meredith. Mr. Meredith was inspired by the ensemble’s performance and contacted Mr. Yee to collaborate. Mr. Meredith created “The Grey Dawn is Breaking” utilizing the folk tune “Kathleen Mavourneen”. This arrangement has been dedicated to Christopher Yee and the Four Points Wind Ensemble, who will perform the world premiere at the spring concert on May 26, 2016 with Mr. Meredith in attendance!

“Good music played well inspires the imagination.” – James Meredith

The FPMS Band Staff is honored and humbled by Mr. Meredith’s outreach, work, friendship.

The title refers to the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. The piece opens with a beautiful statement which then morphs into something new in the faster middle section. The triumphant final section emerges with lively percussion and ensemble swells, simulating the butterfly getting ready to take flight. This imaginative work ends peacefully as the butterfly floats off into the distance.

This performance is dedicated to Christopher Yee for his leadership, energy, and dedication to beginning and establishing the national success of the Four Points Band.
